Sustainable ceremonies
Because time is short to help the earth
Sophie is a sustainability specialist - here are some suggestions to make sure your ceremony is friendly to the planet as well as to you and your dear ones
Travel is a big part of the emissions of any event. You might want to factor in this in choosing a venue. Try https://www.meetcentral.co.uk/index
Food is another biggie. Avoid waste (try hard not to over-cater), look for a balance between plant-based and other foods (with plenty of the former!) Choose your caterers with this in mind.
If flowers are involved, consider sourcing local and in season ones if possible. Flowers from abroad are usually flown in, which is a big part of their environmental load.
Don’t be shy about saying that repurposed clothes are fine. Let people have fun finding their perfect pre-loved outfit.
Talk to Sophie about environmental options between burials (cemetery or woodland) and cremation, as this is one of her areas of expertise.
In the end, all events of course contribute to emissions in some way. Both weddings and funerals might be times when you want to have something a bit special. Offsetting or making a donation to a pro-planet project can help you out. Choose carefully!
